A few words from Langston Hughes

What was your favourite subject in school?

Hold fast to dreams

For if dreams die

Life is a broken-winged bird

That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams

For when they go

Life is a barren field

Frozen with snow.

DP @ WP….English was my favourite subject in school…by a country mile.

I manage. Thank you

How do you manage screen time for yourself?

That little brush with the afterlife I had back in spring when pneumonia nearly tipped me over the edge. I don’t know. Things just change organically, really. I just stopped scrolling. Maybe I just didn’t have the energy? I uninstalled lots of apps and only kept a few because I didn’t want to lose touch totally with buddies I’d made online over the last fifteen years or so.

Now I’ll just check the Sky News app, first thing. The weather, collect some time rewards for an interior design game I don’t play every day and drop into WP to see what the deal is.

Depending on Patches plans for the morning I’ll check out Reader if  time allows before our first walk. There are some really great posts out there today! You guys are nailing it.

Later, I’ll exercise some grey matter with an hour of word and card games and then tonight Netflix or Prime….or at the moment 7 seasons of Ray Donovan has landed on the channel 4 app. Each with 10-12 episodes.

See you on the other side.

Under a Beaver Moon

The biggest and brightest of three consecutive supermoons to end the year will be at the height of its illumination at 1.19pm local time, Uk, today

A supermoon is one that coincides with the moon being at its closest point to the Earth, in its orbit.

The name Beaver comes from native American tribes. It’s the time of year when the animals prepare their lodges for winter.

For us, it is the time for refection, preparation, and gratitude. Stability and patience. A moment to ground ourselves and strengthen our spirits for the year ahead

How long is a piece of string?

What will your life be like in three years?

WP, you have landed a DP impossible to answer, literally.

Currently, I am more than happy to be sat peacefully and quietly at the station whilst the high-speed  living and technology train hurtles on past me.

Stepping off the treadmill has been a blessing, but by stopping and enjoying the stillness, I am acutely aware of the ferocious power that Change has  become.Perhaps it has always been so?

In three years’ time, it would be wonderful to believe I have remained healthy and content. Able to pay my bills and have a heartbeat at my feet to share a life with.

As I write, the birds are making themselves known through my open bedroom window. There’s quite a breeze, but it’s strangely warm for November. Another year, drawing to a close…Another waiting in the wings.

Free to breathe

Invent a holiday! Explain how and why everyone should celebrate.

Life for many people life is a full-time job with extra shifts. There are a multitude of reasons why  that is, and I  would like for them to have a special day, totally free of responsibilities.

There is a theme running through many of the posts in reply to the DP ( which, incidentally, was set exactly a year ago. Come on, WP, really?)

The theme is for stillness, quiet and caring, freedom or gratitude. A digital detox here or a complete day of rest there. Variants on the theme of complete downtime.

A day free of racism was mentioned, too.

It would surely be the best holiday event ever to celebrate World Peace. But realistically, that’s never going to happen. There is too much greed and ego for that.  September 21st is the designated International Day of Peace, but it doesn’t get much airplay, does it?

Ummm…

What are your favorite websites?

Oh, WordPress! Really? Today’s DP was such a simple one. Not so long ago, I’d answered something similar and thought it would all be plain sailing, tell you the few sites I visit, and then get on with my day.

Naturally, I  was interested in where fellow bloggers spend some of their time and quickly became engrossed in their replies. I began taking notes as I was intrigued by their lists. And now I have this long list of my own that I so want to work through…

It’s much calmer outdoors this morning after a few stormy days, but the carpet of wet leaves really does need tidying up. I am a huge believer in the #leavetheleaves campaign. But they can’t be left sprawled out all over the shop. That was the first thing I had set my heart on doing after dropping into WP for a few minutes. Now, over an hour later, I’m just itching to look at some of these websites I’ve heard about for the first time today.

Through the French windows, the leaves look back at me, suggesting they’re not going to tidy themselves up.

Through another window, I eye the car. It has the same attitude as the leaves. Living rural-side with a dog in Autumn, well my wheels are not going to stay pristine for long, are they? That needs doing inside out, and this is exactly the mild and dry Sunday morning to do it.

And yet here I am. . We spoke of procrastination versus laziness not so long ago ..Oh dear. What to do? Perhaps another cup of coffee and an early snack would be a start?

Is there an age or year of your life you would re-live?

Adyar. Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India

21 years ago today

I saw him from the window of the car I was travelling in. Pink like a newly hatched bird. Scuff marks and cuts across his body, exhausted. At this very moment the course and shape of my life would change considerably.

It was during a tight work schedule, so I was unable to ask the driver to stop. Reaching my destination I was able to call the Blue Cross of India and speak to a contact I had made months before. They agreed to collect the street dog and take him into their care.

The day Tony came to live with me

The dog wasn’t doing well in the confines of the charity’s compound ( which reminded me of the times I had worked for the charity Crisis at their Christmas shelter and some of the men still went outside to sleep, despite adequate space indoors for them to do so) but I got permission for Tony to come and live where I was staying. ( I was so grateful for that) He wasn’t allowed indoors but as luck would have it there was a small new-build in a fenced off area attached to my place of residence. It was perfect.

And this is the beginning of our story. That amazing first year together. Before I took him and a pup to the UK with me.

All change….

What historical event fascinates you the most?

Most days, I’ll glance at the DP and then take the Patches out for a long walk. He sniffs every blade of grass, and I have a think about the blog. On returning home, I can pretty much write off the top of my head… but occasionally, I need to scribble down my thoughts/ideas/facts to get them in order.

Today is one of those days…and some. I’m struggling to answer the DP in a bite-sized piece. How on this Earth do I tell you why the Industrial Revolution fascinates me the most?

I guess it’s the social history that has interested me for the longest time. How rural cottage industries using animal power, wind, and water as energy sources in 16th century Great Britain was left behind as steam-powered factories took over production.

The Industrial Revolution was not a sudden rupture but an evolution of the availability of land, labour, capital, scale, and control.

Massive social change.

and they cost nothing…

What’s something you believe everyone should know.

Manners Maketh Man, the motto of Winchester College stands true today as it ever did.

Something which costs nothing changes everything.

The other day, a tiny tot waved a thank you at me as I stopped the car to let the group she was with cross the road. It warmed my heart and made me think that she was in good hands, to be taught a politeness like that. It’s amazing how many  ‘ grown-ups’ in the same situation will ignore you completely.

Ugly table manners don’t go unnoticed when it matters. A simple please or thank you speaks volumes.

Common Courtesy is something everyone could consider…
