Christmas unwrapped

How do you celebrate holidays?

As kids, we had nice, pleasant Christmases. As a grown-up, I’ve certainly had some fun times with friends….

Holidays got lost when I lived overseas, but it was no hardship.

Now, back in the UK, I find that I enjoy the ambience around Christmas. The effort some people go to putting up copious amount of lights on their houses. Maybe a Santa on the roof and a reindeer in the garden. It always makes me smile, and the kids must love it!

Christmas music in the shops drives some folk mad, but I don’t mind doing at all. I enjoy the food without the dead turkey on my plate. The mince pies and fruit cake, and even the brussels sprouts.

Getting remembered with a Christmas card and maybe a little note is lovely.  But that’s where it ends, because I’d prefer to be home me in my pj’s and Patch in his elf jumper eating pizza.

The worst bit? When they find out you’re spending the day alone. I really want to say ‘ stand back and please take your pity with you’. I get to thinking that their ‘concern’ is really about them? Folk who haven’t done a solitary day like that. Do they fear it? Or secretly wish they could indulge in such peace?

The day that is special to me is New Year’s  … and all that has to offer. Now that’s worthy of celebration!
