What’s the most annoying trope in books or movies?
Not sure this is the most annoying, but it is one of them, for sure..
The ‘when friends become lovers’ trope is the cinematic equivalent of a toddler hiding behind a sheer curtain and believing you can’t see them.
The moment two characters insist they’re just friends, I’m already rolling my eyes so hard it hurts. But still I watch.
Then comes the accidental finger‑touch, followed by that microscopic jealous flick: the eyebrow twitch that says, “Please stop interacting with other humans,” while the script pretends it’s subtle.
After that, we get the groundbreaking revelation that their long‑term friend is, shockingly, attractive. Stunning. Revolutionary. Humanity has never witnessed such innovation.
By the time the scheduled confession scene arrives, I’m not rooting for romance. I’m rooting for the credits. Even the credits know what’s coming; they’ve seen this trope more times than the actors.

Ironically, in real-life this a beautiful scenario. On screen taking ninety minutes of my life that I’ll never get back, not so much.
